![]() Yes, SWS was always going to primarily be a console game. What could Motive Studios have done to make HOTAS control better? I think they were stuck between a rock and a hard place. I honestly think SWS is one of the worst HOTAS space sims out there. So if you have any plans to play older space sim classics like FreeSpace (best space combat sim ever made) or flight simulators, a HOTAS is the better choice. A twin stick setup is great for 6DoF space sims but quite limited outside of that. Generally, a HOTAS system (especially one with a microstick on the throttle) will serve you a lot better in the long run than a twin stick setup. If you're not too rough with it it will last a while, but the twist axis on it has some inherent weaknesses that if you beat the shit out of the twist axis will cause internal breakage. The T16000m stick itself can be hit-or-miss. The only other one in that price range is the CH Pro Throttle, and it's more of a sidegrade with different trade-offs. The TWCS throttle that comes with it is probably the best lower-end throttle on the market. Pretty much anything else as useful is going to cost a good chunk more than that, so it will do. The FCS flight pack is an Ok place to start. If I enjoy playing in Squadrons, I'd be interested in playing some other flight simulators, but mainly space ones.Īny advice on whether I should get 2 sticks or a stick and throttle? Game recommendations for after Squadrons are also appreciated. But I've also heard two sticks might do me better than a stick and throttle. Right now, I'm looking at the Thrustmaster T.16000M Stick and Throttle, as it is around my budget and I've heard good things. ![]() But IMHO the control in the older Star Wars titles like X-Wing Alliance and most other space combat sims is vastly superior. Still, if you have no other frame of reference you probably won't mind. Other parts of the interface also suck and we so clearly designed with console controllers in mind and HOTAS as an afterthought (the targeting system is about the most obtuse and annoying one I've ever seen in a space combat sim). This has to do with the way the devs compensated for console controller twitchiness by implementing a ton of induced inertia to fuck with joystick control rather than implement input dampening on console controllers. If you need a few more, maybe buy a little keypad so the buttons are easy to find in VR. Get a VBK Gladiator EVO, use the mini-throttle on the base and it should have enough hats and buttons that you can just bind everything to the stick and base. What I'm getting it, is for Squadrons, the throttle isn't important - the stick is, and with the T.16000M bundle you're buying a naff stick with a decent-ish throttle when really you want most of your investment to go to the stick.Īt your price point I'd recommend just ditching the throttle entirely. Also Squadrons doesn't have that many buttons to map compared to a typical flight sim. Most of the time it'll be either at max or half. Throttle is a lot less important since you don't need to do fine throttle adjustment in Squadrons - it's not like you're going to be landing or doing Air to Air refueling. You're going to need a good joystick with some precision, since you need you need to make fine adjustments to aim your lasers at fast moving targets or you're going to be at a significant disadvantage against players using gamepads.
